Coach Miguel Rodriguezis a 1999 graduate of Long Beach High School. He is currently in his 12th year coaching in the Long Beach Wrestling program. He has trained the youth of Long Beach at many levels by serving as a middle school coach, recreation coach and high school coach. In 2009. Together with coaches John Anfossi, Ray Adams, Leo Palacio and Bernard Valentin, started a youth "Elite" wrestling program called the Long Beach Gladiators. The goal of this club is to train serious wrestlers in grades 1-8. The addition of this program is destined to bring the program to new heights. The Gladiators travel all over the United States pursuing the best competition. He has been selected as one of the New York State Schoolboy National Team coaches. Six members of the Gladiator program earned spots on that team. Rodriguez has been a member of the Long Island Empire State Games wrestling team. In the past, he was selected to be an assistant coach for the New York State Cadet National team. He helped lead the team to All-American status. In addition, he was selected to be one of the coaches for the Long Island Empire State Game team in 2009. He trained his younger brother Eduardo Delgado to a NY State Championship in 2006 for Long Beach and a runner-up finish in 2007. Eduardo was also a 4x All-County wrestler, 2x Nassau County Champion and a college All-American at Nassau C.C. Once again this year, Rodriguez brought a team of Long Beach Wrestlers to Puerto Rico to compete in the Copa Sparta Tournament. In 2010, he was the recipient of the Long Beach Latino Civic Association Youth Leadership Award for his outstanding work with the young people in Long Beach. His son, Elijah is an eighth grader and is one of the young an upcoming stars for Long Beach Marines. Miguel works for the Long Beach School District at the Lido Elementary School.
Aside from my parents, WRESTLING has been the single most important influence in my life. It changed my life and everything that I am thankful for today is in someway connected to wrestling. I have been involved in wrestling for over 17 years as both a competitor and a coach. My goal is to have the sport of wrestling impact as many young people as possible so that they to can reap its benefits throughout their lives.
Bernard Valentin is in his 5thyear as the JV Wrestling Coach at LBHS. Prior to coming home to coach at LB, he was the Head Assistant Wrestling Coach at Southern Connecticut State University from 1997-1998. He was also served as the Assistant Coach at SCSU from 1995-1997. During his high school days, he wrestled for Paul Gillespie and Reggie Jones at LBHS from 1987-1990. He was a 2x Nassau County Champion and finished 3rd in NYS. He served as team captain and won over 100 matches. In his four years wrestling for Long Beach, the program won 7 out of a possible 8 County Team Titles (4 Tournament and 3 Dual Meet Titles) –It was the best four year stretch in LB Wrestling history. He was also a member of the 1987 NYS Championship team. In college, he attended SCSU and was a 2x N.C.A.A. All-American. He was a 3x National Qualifier, captain of the team, and recorded over 100 career victories. In 2002, he was inducted into the LBHS Wall of Fame. He is married to Sheri and they have two children, daughter Sophia is 12 years old and son Jack is 7 years old. He is a School Psychologist for the LB School District. He has also run 2 marathons (LA and LI) and 2 sprint triathlons (one individual and one team-run).
